Identification:

Small heron with grayish green back, maroon or reddish brown neck, and black on top of head; yellowish or orange legs; immature bird is darker and heavily streaked; to 45cm (18in); wingspan to 60cm (24in). (Garcilla Verde).

Habitat:

Aquatic habitats at low- and mid elevations on Caribbean and Pacific slopes; found along coasts in mangrove sand inland around marshes, lakes, ponds, and rivers.
