Identification:

Smallish black and white barred bird with light brown or brown-gray chest, yellowish belly, yellow at back of neck; longish, straight bill; male only has red on top of head;to 19cm (7.5in). (Carpintero de Hoffman, Pájaro Carpintero).

Habitat:

Low and middle elevations, northern Pacific slope (and small parts of Caribbean slope); prefers open, wooded sites such as forest edges, tree plantations, gardens with trees.

Found in the following Parks:

Carara National Park.
Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve (Fotos).
Palo Verde National Park.
Rincón de La Vieja National Park.
Santa Rosa Nacional Park.
