Large black bird with red crest on head; whitish stripe runs from edge of bill down along neck; 2 whitish stripes on back; light-colored, barred lower chest / belly; male has small red stripe on side of throat; female has black forehead; to 34 cm (13.5 in). (Carpintero Lineado, Pájaro Carpintero).
Low and some middle elevation forests, Caribbean and Pacific slopes; found in tree canopy in open, wooded sites such as forest edges and clearings.
