Identification:

A small, colourful snake with a small head and short tail; head is generally black and yellow, with the snout being all black; the body has alternating rings of red, black, and yellow, or only red and black; yellow rings when present are very narrow, to 1m (3 ft).

Habitat:

Low and middle elevation wet and dry forests, Caribbean and Pacific slopes; found on the ground in forests, but also basking in open areas and in rocky hillsides.
