Identification:

A thickset, stocky pit-viper with a triangular brown head with dark eye-stripes and a tan or greyish-brown body with dark brown or black blotches; the name refers to its vaunted ability to launch itself and strike at long distance, but actually only over about half of its body length, to 80cm (32 in).

Habitat:

Low and middle elevation wet forests, Caribbean and Pacific slopes; usually found on the ground but also low in trees.
