Cartago
Cartago, today the third largest urban area of Costa Rica was founded in 1563 and was the Capital of Costa Rica until the year 1823. It is at a distance of 23km from San José. An eruption of the Irazú Volcano in 1723 and two mayor earthquakes in 1841 and 1910 destroyed almost all of the old buildings. Cartago lays at an altitude of 1435m between the Central Cordillera and the Cordillera of Talamanca next to the Volcano Irazú. For tourists the main attractions are the Irazú Volcano and the many possibilities of White Water Rafting starting near the city of Turrialba.
