Costa Rica has two wild canine species
The coyote (Canis latrans) and the gray fox (zorro gris; Urocyon cinereoargenteus). The brownish gray coyote (also found in North America) is omnivorous. In Costa Rica it prefers the drier forest and open areas of Guanacaste, also it is found in other regions. Active at any time, it is seen in parks such as Santa Rosa, where its trademark nighttime howling and yapping are heard. It is also common in Monteverde. The grey fox is grayer, much smaller, and more nocturnal. Both species avoid the rainforest.
