Biologists can't agree what to call the Costa Rican porcupine

Tso various names refer to one species, easily identified by its spiny coat (puerco espín; Coendou mexicanus). Generally blackísh with a lighter head and belly, it is roughly 40cm long plus a 25cm tail. It is arboreal and mainly nocturnal. During the day it may rest on a branch or den inside a hollow tree; local guides may know about favored sleeping places. A Monteverde guide reports seeing one about every fourth night when leading flashlight nightwalks in the preserve.
