Three species of rabbits are found in Costa Rica
Three species of rabbits are found in Costa Rica. The eastern cottontail (conejo cola blanca; Sylvilagus floridensis) is familiar to North American visitors. It is a small (about 40cm) brown rabbit with a little brown-and-white tail like a ball of cotton wool. It is widespread at most elevations except inside rainforests, where it is replaced by the forest rabbit (conejo de bosque; Sylvilagus brasilensis), which looks similar, except the tail is brown and even tinier. Cottontails are found on the rainforest edge, but not inside. A third species Sylvilagus dicei, is reported in some highland areas.
