There are five squirrel species
The red-tailed squirrel (ardilla roja; Sciurus granatensis) is grayish with a red belly and red tail, and is quite common. More abundant is the variegated squirrel (chiza; Sciurus variegatoides), which has various forms. The most frequently seen are mainly whitish with a black back or reddish with a black back and a black-and-white tail with red markings below. The other squirrels are less likely to be seen and are usually smaller and live at high altitudes.
