Friendship Caribic and Friendship Atlantic Conservation Area, Puntarenas, Coto Brus

It forms part of the La Amistad Biosphere Reserve. The forest here covers almost all the protection zone. It is high and diverse in tree species with a predominance of oaks (Quercus). Here, the Lauraceae, the main feed of the quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno), form almost pure stands in some parts. In the undergrowth, there are lots of palms and most of the trees are weighed down with epiphytes. This very wet zone is the source of a large number of rivers that supply the whole San Vito region with water. A grit road joining San Vito, La Lucha and Las Tablas allows visitors to get a taste of the truly beautiful forests of this protection zone.
