History
The canton was first established by Indians and then, since 1750, by citizens who came from Alejuela, Heredia, San José and Cartago. The area developed initially due to an ox-cart trail made in 1843, the construction of the Pacific Railway, and the opening of the Costanera Highway between the capital and the Pacific (now the main access to Quepos).

The canton is drained by the Río Grande which has an electricity generating damn around Garita. Coffee, sugar cane, corn, beans, vegetables and beef are the main agricultural outputs. Atenas, the governmental seat, is situated on a cliff of the Aguacate Mountains at an elevation of 698 meters.
