History

Naranjo was first settled in 1830. The town ws first called "Los Naranjos" (the Orange Groves) because of the large number of orange trees found there but was evetually shortened to Naranjo.

General Description

The town of Naranjo is located at the base of the Espíito Santo Hills at an elevation of 1,036 meters. The canton is drained by the Grande colorado, Molino, Barranca and El Espino rivers. The main products are coffee, tapioca, plantain bananas, corn, beans, rice, sugar cane and tobacco. Beef is also important.

Places of Interest

In Naranjo each year, a large festival is held in honor of the Virgin de Lourdes which brings pilgrims from all over the country. There is a lookout for tourists, Mount Espírito Santo, where one can experience some gorgeous views.

Climate

The climate is pleasant with average temperatures of 20 to 21.6 degrees celcius.
