History

Bagaces, Canton of Guanacaste Province

The name of the canton evolved from the name of the Indian Chief Bagatzi who lived in the region at the time the Spanish arrived. Bagaces became a canton in 1848 and was classified as a town in 1918.

Economy

The most important means of livelihood here re cattle ranching, vegetable and grain farming, and dairy farming.

Hydrography and Climate

The principal river flowing through the canton is Las Piedras, which is the best communication route from Puerto Bebedero to the gulf. Other rivers include Salto, Tenorio, Potrero, and Rio Blanco. The air temperature is usually around 28 degrees C.

There are several agricultural and conservation projects operating in the region: San Ramon, Bagatzi, and the biological reserves of Palo Verde and Lomas de Barbudal, totally in a tropical forest setting where there are preserved many varieties of wood trees, rare species of animals and over 150 species of birds. North of the canton are the Miravalles and Guipilapa volcanoes, the former still active (the people who live near it say they often hear strong rumblings coming from it). At the foot of Miravalles there are hornillas, holes with deposits of sulphur, mud, pure water, and mineral waters in constant state of boiling and a geothermic project.
