History
Most of the people who live here are descendents of the Corobici Indians. The region corresponding to the canton Cañas was discovered in 1522. The town used to be called Escarbadero, but after Jose Maria Cañas visited it, it was named after him. It was granted the status of ciudad (city or town) n 1912. As the people of Cañas are known for their friendliness and hospitality, their town has been called 'Ciudad de la Amistad' (Friendship Cit)

Economy
The most important economic activities here are agriculture and ranching… sugar cane, rice, beef and on a lesser scale, beans, corn, cantaloupe and watermelon. At Hacienda Tobago, people mill sugar cane and produce gasohol. Fishing is done by the mouth of the Tempisque River in El Nispero Township.
