History
The canton gets its name from a tree the natives called ¨wide leaf¨ (¨hoja ancha¨). It was first settled by inhabitants of San Ramon, Atenas and Palmares and was declared a canton in 1971.

Economy
The most important agricultural activities are sorghum, rice, corn, beans, honey, fruit and cattle.

Hydrography and Climate
The area is drained by the rivers Oro, Nosara, Blanco, Iguanita, Camaron, Cacao and Martina. The average temperature is between 26 and 27 degrees Celsius.

Interesting Sites
It has a small coastal zone on which is Carrillo Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. Also in this canton is the Chorotega Indian Reserve of Matambu.
