History
The region was discovered by Spaniards in 1522, which had come from Leon, Nicaragua and later by settlers from Rivas, Nicaragua. In this canton you'll find the Santa Rosa National Park where the battle against William Walker was fought. La Cruz canton came into being in 1969. The name refers to when a cross was placed because of the death of a rancher named ¨Cruz¨ (Cross).

Economy
The most important agricultural activities are sorghum, rice, corn, beans, coffee and cattle.

Interesting Sites
Tourist attractions include the Mirador A Cruz (La Cruz Lookout Point) and the Santa Rosa National Park. Its beaches are gorgeous: Job, Cuajiniquil, Puerto Soley, Las Nubes, Bahia Salinas, and Manzanillo. Also, the canton has a two-kilometer wide forest buffer zone along the Nicaragua border, part of the Cordillera Volcanica de Guanacaste Forest Reserve, and the Isla Bolaños Reserve.
