History
The canton was created in 1961 in the Territory that was called Colonia Carmona. Nandayure was first settled in 1910 by a colony of farmers from Atenas, San Ramon and Palmares. The name ¨Nandayure¨ comes from a popular local legend.

Economy
The most important agricultural activities are sorghum, rice, corn, beans, coffee and cattle.

Hydrography and Climate
The area is drained by the rivers Sapoa, Sabalo, Cañita, Mena, Orosi, Sardina, Cañas, Las Haciendas, Tempisque and Costa Norte. The climate is warm.

Interesting Sites
There is very good tourist potential here that has not been tapped. The canton has several of the best beaches on the coast including San Miguel, Coyote, Caletas, Comosalito, and La Isla. It also has a marshland that forms part of the Gulf of Nicoya.
