History
The name comes from the most famous chief of the tribe, Barva, of the Huetar Indians. The Spanish later displaced the Huetars in 1569. In 1601, the area was made a stop for mule teams and by 1613, the village of San Bartholomew de Barva was formed.

General Description
The canton is situated on the Barva mountain mass. The terrain is uneven but fertile. It is drained by the rivers Pirro, Seco, Río Segundo, La hoya and Barva. The area produces coffee, sugarcane and beef cattle. |
Interesting Sites
In Barva, you´ll find the Coffee Institute (Instituto del Café). Most of the canton is part of the Greater Metropolitan Area. Part of Braulio Carrillo Nacional Park and Cordillera Volcánica Central Forest Reserve are found here as well as the lake of Barva Volcano.
