History
The canton was inhabited by indigenous groups as well as the Spansih. Development Ccame from the banana industry and the railraod b etween Siquirres and San José.
General Description
The area is drained by the rivers Reventazón-Parismina, Chirripó and Tortuguero. The principal form of employment is farming, especially in bananas, cacao, tubers and livestock.
Interesting Sites
There is great diversity of flora and fauna by the Cordillera Volcanica Central Forest Reserve.
Climate
The canton is wet and with average temperatures of 24 to 25 Degrees Celcius.
