History

The canton was first settled by black immigrants from the Caribbean who had come to make their living at fishing. The first village was established at Cahuita.

General Description

There is a coral platform located along Puerto Viejo, Manzanillo, Punta Mona and the area north of Cahuita. The submerged coral ref. made up of live coral, is a complex of exoskeletons of calcareous material. There are also zones of glacial origin Duch as Mount Chirripó. Production includes banana, cacao, corn, plantain, tuber and cattle raising.

Interesting Sites

Almost all of Cauhuita corresponds to protected areas, since Cahuita Nacional Park, with the only coral ref. in the country is there. Other popular tourist areas are Gandoca Manzadillo Nacional Wildlife Refuge, La Amistad Nacional Park and various Indian Reservations.
