History
The canton was originally inhabited by Boruca Indians. White men began to settle in 1870 when a road was oponed between El Guarco and Boruca. Within the canton are several indigenous communites: Cabagra and Guaymi in the Potrero Grande District, Salitre and Cabecar de Ujarrás in the Buenos Aires District and in the districts of Boruca, Pilas and Colinas, the Boruca, Térraba and Curré Indian Reservations. Some interesting findings from here are some prefectly spherical granite rocks.
General Description
The canton is drained by the rivers Diques and Térraba. The main economic activity is pineapple.
Interesting Sites
There are plans to build a hydroelectric dam on the Térraba River. This would form a lake three times the size of Arenal. The Project has not materialezed, however, due to lack of resources.

It is cold at the top of the Chain of Talamanca.
