History
In 1851, Esparza was the second canton of Alajuela, but in 1915, it seceded to become the second canton of Putarenas Province. Puerto Caldera, which began functuionsing as a port in 1577, is within the jurisdiction of this canton. In 1981, the port was reinaugurated as a port for state comerse, replacing the port of Puntarenas. The town of Esparza was founded in 1574.

General Description
It is drained by the rivers Barranca, Jesús María and Abangares. The folloowing crops have been cultivated in the area since pre-Colombian times: corn, beans, cassava, various fruits (especially medlars, sapodilla plums, nancites, avocados, caimitos, jocotes, cashew and papaya. Also important to the region are salt, beekeeping, tourism and gold mining.

Interesting Sites
One historical landmark is the Puente de Las Damas (Bridges of the Ladies) located at the canton limit with San Mateo. Popular beaches for locals are Dona Ana, Caldera, Tivies, Mata de Limón and Puerta Caldera.
