History
This canton was first settled between 1874 and 1875 by migrants from Desamparados, Aserrí, Alajuelita and San Francisco de Dos Ríos. It was named after Tomás Acosta, governor of the province of costa Rica before it was a colony (1797-1810).

General Description
Located in the hills between Puriscal, Aserrí, mora and Escaú, this canton is mountainous but fertile. Principal crops include coffee, itabos, macadamia, citrus fruits, corn, beans and beef. Local coopertives export large quantities of macadamia and ornamental plants to the U.S. and Canada.
