History
The area wasw first settled in 1864 and given the name Santa María in 1867. The canton got its name from the journeys made by the Chief Ota of the Quepos Indians. Adding a "D" to the name, it became Dota.

General Description
The Inter-american Highway passes through the eastern side of the canton. The rest of the area is linked to this highway by the road to Tarrazú. The canton is drained by several major rivers: Savegre, Roncador and Río Brujo and their tributaries. The Dota canton produces, in our opinion, one of the very best quality coffees in Costa Rica! It also produces citus fruit and beef.
