History
Goicoechea became a canton in 1981 with Guadalupe as its designated government seat. Goicoechea was named after a distinguished Franciscan priest Friar José Antonio de Liendo y Goicoechea. The early settlers made their homes in what is known today as Calle Blancos, the first road in the area.

General Description
The terrain is relatively flat. Although the main crop of early farmers was tobacco, it is now coffee.
This canton is drained by the rivers Torres, Purral, Tiribí, Ipís, Ozotal, Cangrjos, Patalillos, Patal, and Barreal.

Goicoechea Canton, part of the greater Metropolitan Area, also has the Doctor Ricardo Jiménez Nuñez Clinic, the Avance Hydroelectric Plant, the historical and architectural landmark, the Women's Reformatory, the lookout point, Rancho Redondo, and even the Cordillera Volcánica Central Forest Reserve.
