History
The canton was completely inhabitedby Indians during pre-Colombian times and was not settled until the second half of the 20th Century. It offically became a canton in 1962 and was named after former President Leon Cortés Castro in gratitude for his support in the area.
General Description
The canton is drained by the Pirrís and Tarrazú Rivers. Its main products are coffee, hemp and beef.
Interesting Sites
The cantons Dota, Tarrazú and Leó Cortés are similar and often referred to as "Los Santos" ("The Saints" - Saint Mary, Saint Mark, and Saint Paul).
Climate
Its average temperature is a pleasant 20 degrees C (68 F).
