History
The area was inhabited by Brunca Indians when the first Spanish arrived in 1600.

General Description
The Inter-American (Pan-American) Highway passed through this, the largest canton in the San José Province. The main economic activities involve coffee, beans, corn, tobacco, fruit trees and livestock. The canton is drained by the watershed of the Río Grande de Térraba and the watershed of rivers Savegre and Barú.

Interesting Sites
The main tourist attractions are around the foothills of the Talamanca mountains - especially the Cerro de la Muerte (Buena Vista) and Chirripó National Park which is over 3,000 meters high.

Its average temperature is a pleasant 20 degrees C (68 F) , but freezing temperatures are found higher up in the mountains.
