History
Santa Ana was settled in the 1500´s. It is believed that the canton got its name from the first landowner Jeronimo de Retes, who in 1658 named his land Santa Ana in honor of St. Ann. In 1850, the first Catholic chapel was built, also in honor of St. Ann.

General Description
This canton is found at the foothills between Escazú and Puriscal and drained by the rivers Uruca, Corrogres, Navajas, Piulas, Canca, La Cruz, San Marcos and Muerte. ITs chief products are onins, beef, fruits and vegetables, and coffee. Pottery is also an important part of the economy. The canton has two hydroelectrical plants (Belén and Brasil).
