History
The first official name of this canton, established in 1862, was Hato de Dota. Its present name is of Indian origin, which according to historians evolved from the word atarrazú, meaning 'rocky ground at the mouth of the mountain'.
General Description
Coffee growing is the most important activity followed by cattle raising. The area is also know for its variety of fruits
The terrain is rough with beautiful, fertile valleys. San Marcos is situated on a hill between the Parrita River and one of its tributaries.
Interesting Sites
This canton is linked to the City of San José by a good highway that intersects with the Pan American Highway and another highway that goes through the city of Desamparados. Another good road leads to the Pacific coast. Four hundred meters from the Catholic church there is an interesting bridge over the Parrita River on whose banks, near the villa there is a hot spring known for its health benefits.
