History
Tibás comes from an Indian word meaning "hot" or "beautiful river". The first settler in the canton came in the 16th Century and descendents of those original spanish settlers, Cristóbal Chaves, were still known to be living in the area. The city was established in 1835 as the nations´capital. The whole area is divided into lots to form a perfectly symmetrical and rectangular center.
General Description
The canton is drained by the rivers Rivera, Virilla and Torres. The west side of the canton is an industrial zone while some of the rest is used for coffee growing. This is one of San José´s smallest and populous cantons.
Interesting Sites
The canton´s governmental center, San Juan, is located 2km from San José on a high plain. The church is elegant and aesthetically decorated in its interior.

Its average temperature is a cool 20 degrees C (68 F).
