History
It is believed that the name of the canton comes from the word Turruraba which evolved into Turrubara, the name of the chief that ruled the regiion at one time. The first settlers arrived from surrounding areas after 1850.
General Description
The area is drained by the rivers Río Grande de Tárcoles and Tusubres which run NE to SW. The principal products are corn, rice, beef, and sugarcane and aer sold in markets in Orotina and San José.
Interesting Sites
The main road goes from Santiago de Puriscal to Orotina. The canton overlaps the Turrubares Protected Zone and also covers most of the Carara Biological Reserve.
Climate
The climate in most parts is mildly warm but cool in high spots.
