History

In 1910, the canton was established with the name Juan Vásquez de Coronado in honor of the conquistador and governor who explored the region for the Spanish Kingdom. Tourists from all over come to see the gothic construction of the brick Catholic Church first built in 1878.

General Description

The town of San Isidro is located 9km NE from San JosVé on a plain 1385m above sea level. The canton is drained by the rivers, Durazno ("peach"), Cascaja, Blanco, Honduras, Virilla, Ipís and Agra.

The canton produces coffee, fruits (especially apples and peaches), vegetables, beef, milk and ornamental plants. It sends more milk to San José than any other canton.

Interesting Sites

Located in this canton is the headquarters of the International Institute of Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Clodomiro Picado Ssnake Zoo (which has a laboratory of producing snake-bite serum). But most important is the church, one of the finest works of art in the nation.

Its average temperature is a cool 18 degrees Celcius.
