5 Waterfalls, the Biggest Butterfly Observatory in the World and lots of Hummingbirds
The hike lasts about one hour. It goes 1 Kilometer only downhill. From the Welcome Center one proceeds down to the largest Butterfly Observatory of the world, where you will be able to walk among the colorful butterflies and flowers.
A number of informational signs provide basic facts about several butterfly species from Costa Rica and their lifecycles. Make certain you stop at the laboratory and view the butterflies emerging from their pupa and the exhibits displaying them in various growth cycles. If your timing is right you will be able to release a newly emerged butterfly by hand.
From there it is a short walk you to the Hummingbird Garden. At the Hummingbird Garden, the most species-diverse (16) in the country, you can get up close and personal with our playful birds.
Enter the forest at the trail by the Orchid Houses and proceed along the La Paz River towards Templo Waterfall (the beginning of the Trail of Falls). As you make your way down river you will be greeted by unique views of all the waterfalls from the viewing platforms. Slightly above Encantada fall is an exit trail that will take you to the shuttle bus pick-up area where you can catch a ride back to the Welcome Center and skip the walk back up.
