The Tour starts in Liberia Guanacaste. The first stop, besides the different border check-points on the way is Peñas Blancas the small village at the border with Nicaragua. While the driver or the guide takes care of a long list of paperwork (about 30 minutes) you'll be able to have a coffee or visit one of the two duty-free shops. Once in Nicaragua on the way to San Jorge, you'll be surprised about the size of the large lake and the many bicycle-taxis in the streets. Stop and get some fresh fruits for the way. |

Indigenous Pottery and hand-made replicas. The indigenous potters in San Juan de Oriente not only produce pottery the way their ancestors did, they also produce incredibly beautiful copies of what they see in magazines and other places. |

Masaya Indian Crafts Market I don't know how wildlife survives in Nicaragua, but in this market you'll find leather-goods not only made of cow-hide but with skins of snakes, crocodiles, and even frogs. I bought a small chair made of cow-hide to take along on our tours. |

Masaya Volcano On the way to the volcano you'll be making a stop at a beautiful lookout over the Laguna de Apoyo. The active volcano Masaya is a National Park and very impressive. Make sure the wind doesn't blow in your direction to avoid a headache from the fumes or gases that come out of the huge crater. The small path up to the cross was closed, because it was considered to be too dangerous. The view over the lowlands is breathtaking. |

The Highlight of the tour is Granada This oldest colonial town of Central America will take you back in time. Situated directly at the lake it features old colonial houses with lots of history. William Walker who tried to invade Costa Rica lived here. You'll be able to see his house and during a roundtrip in a horse cart with a guide, lots of other houses and churches. |

The most famous hotel in town The Alhambra hotel is the oldest and most famous hotel in town. There you'll have lunch. It is situated right at the Central Park in front of the equally famous Cathedral of Granada. From here you'll start your return to Costa Rica going through and maybe stopping in the town of Rivas. |
